Heather J asked:

I can no longer pay the full balance of my monthly private student loan payments. My lender has denied a deferment, forbearance, and a consolidation. I was told by a friend of mine who works for a mortgage company that as long as I continue to make an effort to pay them- even if it is below the monthly minimum this will not effect my credit score. Is this true?

LT asked:

My fiance has very bad student loan debt. His student loans are private through Chase bank. Unfortunately they are not federally funded through Sallie Mae or the equivalent like mine are. My questions are:

1) If we get married and for some reason divorce, would I inherit half of his student loan debt? The loans were all taken out prior to marriage, obviously. The whole “private” student loan thing kind of scares me…

2) When we get married, will my credit score of 800 be affected now that I am linked to someone with a worse credit score? My fiance’s credit score is not bad (around 680) but his income-to-debt ratio is astronomical.

Any other things I should be worried about????

Thank you in advance!!
Thanks!! What if i apply for something on my OWN (not file jointly). Will they still tie me to my husband and not give me as good of a rate because of his debt, and I am married to that debt?? Hopefully that made sense! Thank you!

Student Consolidation Loans

I have 7 federal student loans, totaling about $62,000 and 1 private student loan totaling about $8,000. Many places are not offering federal student loan consolidation any more, and I only have one private student loan so it doesn’t make sense to take out a private consolidation loan. As of right now, my payments are going to be about $800 monthly starting in November. I can’t afford that! What can I do?

Consolidating Credit Card Debt
